Meet Dream Maker
It Started With a Girl
Long before Sailing Dream Maker became a series of stories, it started with a girl.
Her name is Marcy.
Marcy and I first met when she sold me my first sailboat, a Hunter 460. We stayed friends afterward, checking in from time to time and sharing the ordinary updates of our lives. Eventually, that friendship became something more.
In December 2022, Marcy was heading over to check on an old sailboat she had represented for more than a year.
She asked if I wanted to come along.
She had a feeling I would love the boat.
She was right.
Dream Maker had been sitting on the hard for more than twelve years. For all that time, she hadn't once felt water against her hull.
The engine and generator still ran, although after more than a decade of sitting, no one really knew how well. Her black-iron fuel tanks were rusting, and only one could still be used to hold fuel.
She smelled of diesel.
Nearly everything else was worse.
The air conditioners didn't work. Vents disintegrated in my hands. The electrical system was a rat's nest. The water tanks needed replacement. The rigging was old. Much of the teak had weathered badly.
And the decks were soft almost everywhere.
She was a mess.
And I fell in love.
Not with the boat standing in front of me.
With the boat I could see beneath all of it.
